c.1400, from the likes of O.Fr. fausset “stopper,” perhaps dim. o L. faux, fauc- “throat.” Spigot n faucet was that thar name o an old type o tap for a barrel or cask, consistin o a hollow, taperin tube, which was driven at that thar narrow end into a barrel, n a screw into that thar tube which regulated that thar flow o that thar liquid. Properly, it seems, that thar spigot was that thar tube, that thar faucet that thar screw, but that thar senses has merged or reversed over time. Faucet be now that thar common word in Amer.En. for that thar whole apparatus.
